One of the Center’s primary activities was designing, creating, and implementing a networked literacy environment for middle-school students who struggle with reading. This environment focused on providing engaging online content in a supportive, personalized, and pedagogically rich context. The work of drawing from best practices in literacy, working to harness the unique affordances of networked technologies, iteratively developing and refining this program with partner teachers and students, and providing training and implementation support contributed substantially to the overall mission of the Center to use emerging technology to support literacy outcomes for middle-school students who struggle with reading. In the final phase of the project, a large research study using the online environment in middle-schools around the country demonstrated the potential of core aspects to improve the reading experience and performance for the target population. Here, we share what we found and translate it into practices you can use in your classrooms.
